As part of the Google UX Design Professional Certification Program, we were asked to select a prompt for developing an app that positions ourselves as a user while learning to think about design. The prompt I selected was "Design a mobile-ordering app for a local bakery".
Sweet Tooth Bakery is a fictional bakery based out of Boston, MA. The Sweet Tooth Bakery mobile app will allow users to quickly order and pay for their favorite baked goods, pastries, cakes, coffee in advance for pickup before arriving at the bakery. It will make the ordering process smooth and quick, without the customers having to wait in long lines to order.

To understand user frustration, needs, and requirements, I conducted user research through interviews for my project. My goal was to gain insights into the needs and wants of users so that I can better design my mobile online-ordering app for Sweet Tooth Bakery. The user research methodology I chose for this project was qualitative research.
I was able to create a persona to help me explore the needs of a large group of users and design my app with specific target users in mind.
In order to help identify pain points and opportunities for improvement, I created a user journey map that highlights Jonathan's everyday experience when ordering from Sweet Tooth Bakery in person. Mapping Jonathan's users journey revealed how helpful it would be for create an app to place bakery orders in advance.
I created a competitive audit comparing the digital ordering experience and overall user experience of each competitor's mobile app as a new user.
To outline all the necessary functionality, I created a simple user flow of the main tasks that a user would be able to do.
I created a simple sitemap for my mobile-ordering app to ensure that my persona can successfully complete their key objectives while reducing the existing pain points.
I started my design process by sketching out low fidelity wireframes to get a rough idea of the layout options I had in mind that could be used for testing.
I created a low-fidelity prototype from the primary user flow and wireframes to test functionality before integrating it into the final design.
After prototyping the low-fidelity wireframes, I conducted an unmoderated usability study that helped guide the designs from wireframe to mockups.
I created a high-fidelity prototype that presented a cleaner, more user-friendly, and easy to navigate version of the Sweet Tooth Bakery app.
Impact
In this study, I designed my mobile-ordering app to address common issues faced by users and assess the impact of UX design on their decision-making process. In conclusion, I have a much deeper understanding of how user experience can effect a user's behaviors.
What I Learned
I learned how beneficial it can be to involve users in the design process early and often, and then let feedback drive the process. We are not designing for ourselves and therefore it makes sense to get the users more involved. This project was demanding and time-consuming, but also a very insightful journey.
